This April we would like to recognize two outstanding Habitat for Humanity SF/SCV volunteers, Ian Roberts and Steve Fiske. Ian has been volunteering with us since October 2012 and has been to almost every build site, including new construction and Critical Home Repairs/Disability Modifications and has spent many days at the Chatsworth Habitat Restore. He started volunteering after watching a documentary about Habitat for Humanity. He was inspired by the work Habitat does worldwide and wanted to make a difference right here in his local community. SCV Veteran Leads Effort To Bring Vietnam Wall To Town

Looking to support fellow veterans and educate Santa Clarita Valley youth, Chuck Morris, of Santa Clarita is bringing a Vietnam War memorial wall to Santa Clarita. “It’s amazing how big this event has become — from an idea to fruition — it’s amazing,” said Morris, a veteran of the Korean War. The effort, which is still looking for volunteers, will bring a wall full of names to the Santa Clarita Valley — a 360-foot long, 8-foot high tribute to the 58,238 men and women who died in service during the Vietnam War. City of Santa Clarita Approves Habitat for Humanity Veteran Community

  Santa Clarita City Council unanimously approved Habitat for Humanity San Fernando/Santa Clarita Valleys’ (SF/SCV) “SCV Habitat for Heroes” 87-home community on Tuesday, Mar. 26. This will be an affordable housing community made up of four and three bedroom homes for low-income veterans and their families. Bob Kellar, Mayor for the City, was in full support noting his excitement to approve a well-designed project with the support of so many local community leaders, including the neighbors of the project, Hart School District was among the neighbors, there to support. The proposed 22.8-acre site for the project is on Centre Pointe Parkway south of the Golden Triangle Road intersection and north of Bowman High School. Warner Bros. Builds with Habitat for Humanity SF/SCV in Sylmar

Wednesday, March 20, Warner Bros. came out to the Habitat for Humanity San Fernando/Santa Clarita Valleys’ Sylmar Habitat for Heroes site to help construct a new neighborhood for very low-income veterans. More than 30 Warner Bros. employees came out to show their support for our country’s veterans while getting their hands and clothes a little dirty. Warner Bros. worked on the retaining wall, finishing the plastering in a single day! They are going to come back in the later phases of construction around the same time next year to work on the 12 homes at a more completed construction phase. This is part of Warner Bros. Nickels for Nails/Dollars for Doors – Local Schools Raise Funds to Build Habitat Homes

The 2012-2013 school year has been a busy one for the Nickels for Nails/Dollars for Doors school fundraising program. So far, four schools in Santa Clarita, one in Palmdale and two in the San Fernando Valley have completed or are planning on participating in this fundraising drive. Currently, Plum Canyon Elementary has raised over $500 for Habitat veteran homes in Santa Clarita, leading the way for Habitat for Humanity youth fundraising in North LA County. Other schools who are helping Habitat make homeownership possible are Pico Canyon Elementary and Harvard Westlake.
